JAMB,WAEC, NECO CLAIM TO INTENTISFY FIGHT AGAINST EXAM MALPRACTICES

Some concerned persons in the education sector have commended the recent move by examination bodies in the country to combat examination malpractices.

They called for the sustenance of the fight through constant monitoring, appropriate sanctions and the total overhaul of the education system.

In this special report, our correspondent examines some of the measures and the way forward in the fight against exam malpractices.

For some years now examination malpractices has attained some level of sophistication due to the availability of information and communication technologies.

It is no more news that some online sites exist where genuine questions and answers of yet to be taken examinations can be accessed before each paper.

This development elicited public outcry from many who knew the implication on the image and overall development of the country.

But the good news is that efforts have been put in place.

For instance the joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) under the leadership of Professor Diobu Ojeminde introduced the computer based test system following calls for JAMB to be scrapped.

Recently during the April 2019 examination JAMB equally introduced the central closed circuit television enabling the centers to be monitored by officials at the board Headquarters.

This resulted in one hundred and sixteen (116) exam centers to be delisted as well as more sanctions to offending centers.

Also the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) introduced Biometric Verification Mobile-app, a new test result marking system, which assesses the results to detect group work.

The Acting Registrar of the National Examination Council (NECO), Mr. Abubakar Gana, who acknowledged that there was upward trend in exam malpractice, stated that the council had put measures in place to apprehend culprits.

Following these developments, many people including supervisors, teachers and students were apprehended during the exam.

Speaking on the issue, the immediate past commissioner for Education in Enugu State, Professor Uchenna Ezeh insisted there was the need to sustain the fight.

A retired Principal, Mrs. Justina Agbo, called for a total overhauling of the education sector to attract best hands to ensure students were equipped for exams.

Also a University Lecturer, who has been in the vanguard of fighting exam malpractices, Professor Osioma Onuzulike, said at least the circle of silence over the matter had been broken, but urged the exam bodies to do more.

Other respondents, Dr. Andy Anarado and Miss Chinyere Ukwueze were optimistic that the war against exam malpractice would be won in Nigeria.

According to the respondents, the fight against Exam malpractice should be holistic, all efforts should be geared towards sanitizing the education system to make certificates obtained in the country enjoy the same recognition as those of other countries.
