IMO: POLICE TRAIN PERSONNEL ON ADMINISTRATION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE LAW
REPORTER: CHINAZO ILECHUKWU
The Imo State Police Command says it is taking steps to strengthen its role in the administration of criminal justice law in the state.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Command, Mr. Aboki Danjuma, made this known at a capacity building of officers and men of the command in Owerri.
Mr. Danjuma said the training was an initiative of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, to enhance investigation and prosecution of criminal cases with a view towards improving the operational system in the command.
The Police Commissioner explained that areas such as arrest of suspects by proxy, human rights abuses and ignorance of certain provisions of law by police personnel had been highlighted.
He noted that the issues would be given more attention during the three day training.
A Chief Magistrate in the state, Mrs. Nkiruka Nwaiwu, called on the Police to pay more attention to criminal cases instead of allowing civil matters to distract them.
She identified undetailed investigation and wrong filing of matters in court by the police as factors responsible for loss of cases by the state in courts during prosecution.
The Chief Magistrate added that the workshop would bring more efficiency in policing the state.
The workshop is being attended by the police, the bar and bench as well as human rights groups.
