MEDICAL PRACTITIONER CAUTIONS AGAINST LIPOSUCTION

REPORTER: OBY ARINZE

A medical practitioner, Dr. Emeka Aniebonam, has identified pain, swelling, bruising, soreness, and numbness as after effects of liposuction surgery.

Dr. Emeka Aniebonam stated this in Onitsha, Anambra State, while speaking with Radio Nigeria on the dangers of undergoing a liposuction surgery.

Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure that removes extra fat from the body. It’s also called lipo, lipoplasty, or body contouring and is considered a popular cosmetic surgery option.

People get liposuction to improve the shape or contour of their body. It is also used to remove excess fat from areas such as the thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, arms, neck, or back.

Usually, such persons have tried diet and exercise unsuccessfully to get rid of the fat deposits.

This multi-million naira surgery is trending among ladies in recent times.

According to Dr. Aniebonam, Liposuction is a serious surgery with multiple risks and it is important to discuss all the risks with the doctor before having the procedure.

Dr. Aniebonam, explained that Liposuction requires going under anesthesia for the procedure.

He also explained that the person undergoing such surgery would not feel any pain during the operation but during recovery period.

The medical practitioner pointed out that liposuction is not always pronounced in men because of excess fluid and fat embedded in their abdomen.

Dr. Aniebonam listed accumulation of fluid, which might lead to infection that will spread all over the body; keloid formation, which might emanate from the surgery; infections that could lead to kidney problems as some side effects of liposuction.

He advised people to go for exercise instead of taking unnecessary risk.

“Liposuction is an elective cosmetic procedure that has major risks. It’s not a substitute for weight loss, and not everyone is a good candidate for it” he cautioned.

The medical expert advised those who wanted to go through liposuction to ensure that they meet with a certified plastic surgeon and discuss the potential complications and risks before the surgery.
