CIVIL DEFENCE DAY:NSCDC CAUTIONS PERSONNEL AGAINST MISUSE OF FIREARMS

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in Imo State says it remains committed to the protection of national critical infrastructure and ensure the realization of the safe school programme of the Federal Government.
The State Commandant of the Corps, Mr. Mathew Ovye, gave the assurance at commemoration of the 2024 Civil Defense Day and passing out ceremony of new intakes into the corps in Owerri.
He urged officers and men of the Command to always respect the fundamental human rights of citizens in the discharge of duties as the corps would not tolerate acts of unprofessionalism.
The Acting Zonal Commandant of the Corps in charge of Zone E, Mr. Udoh Ukoh, identified cultism in secondary schools as one of the challenges confronting the society and added that the Corps had redoubled efforts towards eradicating the menace among the young people.
He cautioned the personnel of the corps on the use of firearms, warning that the NSCDC would not spare anybody who would take an innocent life under the guise of accidental discharge.
In a lecture, which focused on safety at home and office environment, the Head of Department Disaster and Risk Management, National Emergency Management Agency Imo State, Mr. Quintus Omalu, advised NSCDC personnel to imbibe the culture of being safety conscious in the discharge of duties to minimize hazards.
The Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, represented by a member of the state legislature, Mr. Innocent Ikpamezie, described NSCDC as a partner in the fight against criminality and assured the commitment of his administration to ensure a crime-free environment.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of gift items to wives of officers, who lost their lives in the line of duty in line with the theme of this year’s event which is “honour the heroes and promote safety skills”.
