EBONYI WOMEN PROTEST AGAINST FGM

REPORTER: AMECHI ODO

As part of activities marking the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, hundreds of women and girls on Tuesday marched round Abakaliki the capital of Ebonyi State to call for an end to the obnoxious practice.

Addressing the women at Government House Abakaliki, the Wife of Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Mary Maudline Nwifuru, in a message, emphasised that the fight against the practice required community sensitization and urged the victims to amplify their voices for intervention.

Mrs. Nwifuru, who was represented by the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Felicia Nwamkpuma, noted that her Pet Project BERWO was ready to dialogue with communities where the practice was still being practiced to create alternatives for people.

She pointed out that her Pet Project BERWO and United Nations Populations Fund and other NGOs would continue to collaborate to rehabilitate and empower the victims.
