REPORTER: AMECHI ODO

The National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced 2023 and 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey in Ebonyi State.

The State Director in the Commission, Mrs. Julia Manyike, told journalists in Abakaliki that the exercise was being carried out in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and key partners.

Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey is a National Sample Survey conducted every five years with the last exercise done in 2018.

A total of 1,400 clusters are to be visited by Data Collectors across the country of which 34 are in 12 local government areas in Ebonyi State.

Briefing journalists in Abakaliki, Mrs. Manyike explained that each household within a cluster would be visited with a bio questionnaire to obtain information from women aged 15-49 and men aged 15-59.

The Federal Commissioner Nominee, National Population Commission to be incharge of Ebonyi State, Dr Jeremiah Nwankwoegu, said Edda was the only Council Area where clusters were not mapped out.

He pointed out that three Local Government Areas of Ezza North, Ezza South and Ikwo had been covered so far.

The Director Public Health in Ebonyi State, Dr. Hyacinth Ebenyi, noted that data to be generated through the Demographic and Health Survey would be of immense benefit to the state government as health is a priority sector in the state.

One of the Supervisors, Mr. Ambrose Ibe, called for sensitization of households to the need to avail Data Collectors of quality information as they were being treated as confidential.
