ANAMBRA ASSEMBLY URGES GOVT TO BUILD PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE IN IHIALA

REPORTER: UCHE NEDEKE

The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the state government to construct a pedestrian bridge at the ever busy Total Filling Station junction Bus Stop, on the Onitsha Owerri Road, Ihiala.

This followed a motion sponsored by the member representing Ihiala Constituency 1, Mr. Jude Ngaobili, pointing out the alarming rate of accident on that axis.

Mr. Ngaobili expressed concern that a large number of pedestrians, including children and the aged struggled to cross the road daily thereby exposing them to dangers of being hit by vehicles.

He said the situation had made it imperative for the government to construct a pedestrian bridge there for overriding public interest.

Supporting the motion, Mr. Noble Igwe of Ogbaru constituency 1, observed that the speed at which vehicles approached the junction had necessitated that a pedestrian bridge be constructed there.

Others, including the Majority Leader and member representing Ekwusigo Constituency, Mr. Ikenna Ofodeme; Mr. Jude Umennajiego of Onitsha South Constituency two; and the member representing Awka North Constituency, Mr. Chimezie Ikwune noted that the primary assignment of government is the protection of lives and property, especially that of the children who are the future generation hence the need for a quick implementation of the motion.

The Speaker of the House, Mr. Somtochukwu Udeze, after listening to the various submissions on the motion, put it to voice vote and a majority voted in support.
