LOW VOTER TURNOUT CHARACTERISE IMO SUPPLEMENTARY ELECTIONS
REPORTER: CHINAZO ILECHUKWU
Voting is still in progress in the supplementary elections organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) for Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency of Imo State and three other state constituencies in the Imo State House of Assembly.
The exercise commenced as early as eight o’clock in the morning at some of the polling units visited in Mbaitoli, Ikeduru, Ahiazu mbaise, Isu and Ideato South Local Government areas where the exercise is taking place.
Normal socio-economic activities are taking place across the state despite the elections as security agents did not announce restriction of movement even in the areas where voting is taking place.
At Umuonuocha Atta Ward 2 in Ikeduru Local Government Area and Umuagara Amaorji in Orodo Mbaitoli Local Government Areas, the exercise was hitch-free as the bimodal voter accreditation system (BIVAS) were functioning seamlessly.
However, the turn out of voters in the areas visited was generally low as no voter was sighted in some of the polling units as at noon unlike previous elections.
The supplementary elections followed violence, disruption of collation and non delivery of election materials during the previous outings.
