AUTO CRASH CLAIMS 3 LIVES AT ONITSHA BRIDGE HEAD
REPORTER: OBY ARINZE
Three people have lost their lives in an accident that occured at Onitsha Head on the Asaba-Onitsha Expressway.
Seven others were reported to have sustained various degrees of injury.
The incident, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), involved a blue Scania truck with registration number LSD697YD and a blue and white Mitsubishi L300 bus with registration number LEH596XA, whose drivers were unidentified.
FRSC team from RS5 31 Onitsha rushed the victims to Toronto Hospital Onitsha where two males and one female were confirmed dead by the doctor on duty and their corpses deposited in the hospital morgue.
An eyewitness account reported that the truck was parked on the bridge after developing some faults.
But on sighting a towing truck removing another vehicle from the bridge, the driver of the truck quickly moved his vehicle without fixing the fault.
In the process, the vehicle failed brake and rammed into three pedestrians walking down the bridge.
On getting to Ojukwu statue, it finally collided with Asaba bus and crashed.
The driver reportedly took to his hills and disappeared.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Sector Commander, FRSC, Mr. Adeoye Irelewuyi, sympathized with the deceased families.
Mr. Irelewuyi however cautioned motorists, especially truck drivers against over-speeding.
He urged them to maintain their vehicles regularly to minimum safety standard before plying the road.
