MAKE FAMILY PLANNING SERVICES ACCESSIBLE TO WOMEN— NGO DG BEGS GOVT

REPORTER: JOHN MADUAGWU

Government at all levels have been urged to implement policies that will make it easier for Nigerian women to have easy access to family planning services across the country.

The Executive Director of a Non Governmental Organization, Mrs. Lilian Ezenwa, made the call while speaking with Radio Nigeria on the 2022 World Population Day.

Mrs. Ezenwa emphasized that issues on global population and its control could not be discussed effectively without talking about how to make family planning services available and affordable for women, especially those in rural communities and developing countries.

She lamented that the worsening economic situation was having a huge impact on many women, who were also dealing with the enormous challenge of pregnancy, child bearing and upbringing.

The Executive Director therefore called on the government to ensure that primary health care centres, especially in rural areas, were adequately equipped to render family planning services to women and their spouses.

She also canvassed that more health workers in health centres should be trained to provide professional assistance to women who are eager to control the number of children they have.

The theme of the 2022 event is “A world of 8 billion: Towards a resilient future for all – Harnessing opportunities and ensuring rights and choices for all.”
