PETER OBI CONDEMNS ONDO CHURCH TERRORIST ATTACK, LAMENTS INSECURITY ACROSS NIGERIA

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has condemned in strong terms Sunday’s attack on worshippers in Ondo State, which left many death and injured.

The worshippers had gathered at St. Francis Catholic Church Owo for the feast of Pentecost but were attacked by gunmen suspected to be terrorists, who disguised themselves as fellow worshippers.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the terrorists had first threw improvised explosive device before shooting indiscriminately at the worshippers, mainly women and children, when the mass was almost rounded off.

Mr. Obi in a statement signed by his media aide, Mr. Valentine Obienyem, described the killing as mindless, heartbreaking and a very sad day in Nigeria’s history.

The Labour Party presidential hopeful expressed worry about the rising cases of violence and insecurity across the country.

He described the prevailing security situation as a constant reminder of how backwards the country had become and the need to rebuild Nigeria.

“The heartless waste of precious lives at Ondo, today, and indeed other parts of the country, where lives are lost in droves, reminds us how awfully we have retrogressed as a nation, and the herculean task, of nation building, ahead of us, in taking back our nation from insecurity and every form of failure holding us down,” Mr. Obi stated.

Mr. Obi, who is a former Governor of Anambra State, condoled with the government, the Catholic Community and the entire people of Ondo State over the dastardly incident as he prayed for the repose of the dead and quick recovery of the wounded.

“These are very challenging times for us all as a people, but with hope, hard work and resilience, we shall overcome,” Obi prayed.

So far, there is no accurate data on the number of the dead in the Sunday terrorist attack, as there exists different figures ranging from 30 to over 50 lives.

Meanwhile, the wounded are said to be receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre and St. Louis Hospital, all in Owo with call for mass blood donations in the two health facilities to help them survive.
