COMRADE SAM UDEKWE EMERGES ENUGU STATE COUNCIL NUJ CHAIRMAN

The Government House correspondent of the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS), Comrade Sam Udekwe has emerged the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council.

Comrade Udekwe, who is the immediate past Vice Chairman of the Council, defeated the immediate former Secretary of the Council, Comrade Amaka Agbo Nzekwe of the Ministry of Information chapel, to emerge victorious in the keenly contested poll.

The Chairman of the election credentials Committee, Comrade Lawrence Njoku while announcing the result, said Comrade Udekwe secured 157 votes to defeat her opponent, Comrade Amaka Agbo Nzekwe, who got 90 votes.

Other executive committee members, to serve with Comrade Udekwe for the next three years, were elected unopposed.

They include Comrade Regis Anukwoji of the Business day Newspaper, who was elected the Vice Chairman and a former Assistant Secretary of the Council, Emma Acha of News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who was elected Secretary.

Others are a former Chairperson Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) Comrade Ifeoma Amuta of Radio Nigeria, who emerged the Assistant Secretary; Comrade Adaku Agbara, also of Radio Nigeria, retained her position as the Treasurer.

Similarly, an online blogger, Comrade Mike Ilediagu of the Private Broadcast Chapel, retained his position as the Financial Secretary alongside Comrade Amaka Uchennaeze of the State Information Chapel, who retained her post of Auditor.

In his acceptance speech, the new Council Chairman, Comrade Sam Udekwe, pledged to bring professionalism to bear in the discharge of his duties.

Comrade Udekwe also promised to maintain the peace exhibited by the immediate past council leadership and asked for necessary support of members to carry everybody along in the operations of the Council.

“I am a man of peace and my peace I will give to you all. I pray to God to bless all of you for the support you gave to me.

“The council is not for me alone but for all of us. For all journalists in Enugu State. We shall all work together to move the union forward,” he assured.

This is the first time in recent years that the NUJ Enugu State Council conducted a less controversial election.
