SOUTH EAST UNIMPRESSIVE IN CVR—IMO REC
REPORTER: CHINAZO ILECHUKWU
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State wants the people of the south east to use the ballot box to address their perceived marginalization during the 2023 general election by arming themselves with permanent voters cards.
He made the call when the management of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Imo state visited him at the Government House, Owerri.
The Governor expressed dismay that insecurity had affected the number of people of voting age to enroll in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) undertaken by INEC.
He, however, appealed to young people to take advantage of the relative peace enjoyed in the area to obtain permanent voters’S cards.
Governor Uzodimma, who assured INEC of his commitment to assist the commission to discharge its functions, advised them to remain focused in the service to the nation.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner Imo State, Professor Francis Ezeonu, who led the delegation, said the visit was to brief the Governor on some of the activities of the commission in the state, which included conversion of over 1,000 voting points to polling units and the challenges faced in the continuous voter registration.
He appealed to the state government to assist the commission in rehabilitating some of its offices at the local government areas and also support INEC in sensitizing people of voting age to register and obtain their cards.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner said, regrettably, that the south east zone had recorded an unimpressive turn out in the continuous voters registration when compared with other geo-political zones.
