ENUGU STATE GOVT TAKES CUSTODY OF 5 YEAR OLD GIRL ABUSED BY STEP MOTHER, UNICEF HAILS GOVT ACTION

The Enugu State Commissioner for Gender Affairs and Social Development, Princess Peace Nnaji, has advised residents of the state to desist from crime, especially crimes against children, warning that government will ensure that perpetrators of these crimes are brought to book.
Princess Nnaji gave the advice during a media briefing in Enugu.
Reacting to the case involving a step mother, who physicaly abused her five year old daughter, Princess Nnaji, explained that the Ministry had swung into action to bring the culprit to justice.
Princess Nnaji noted that the Enugu State Child Rights Act, signed into law by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, protects children from all forms of abuse and violence.
The Commissioner explained that the Governor had directed the ministry to take custody of the child for her rehabilitation and wellbeing.
She assured the public that Enugu State Government was committed to bringing to book, perpetrators of child abuse and violence.
The Chief of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Enugu Field Office, Dr. Ibrahim Conteh commended the Enugu State Government for its strong committment to the protection, wellbeing and development of children.
Dr. Conteh assured the government that UNICEF would continue to collaborate with it on women and child related programmes as well as other key areas.
