Today is International Museum Day
The Day which was first celebrated in 1977 raises awareness on how important Museums are in societal development. Speaking on significance of the celebration, the Curator, National Museum of Unity and Moments Enugu, Mrs Vivian Okeke stated that the event which was observed annually on every 18th May was to sensitize members of the Public on the importance of Museums as the custodian of people’s culture.
While enumerating some of the challenges facing museums in the country, Mrs Okeke stressed the need for museum to be given its place in the society.The theme of this year’s celebration is “Hyper Connected Museums, New Approaches and New Publics”.
Activities to mark the day include match pass and cultural dances by some secondary schools in the State.
