MINISTER ADVOCATES USE OF INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES IN TEACHING OF SCICENCES

ebonyi3The Ministry of Science and Technology is to collaborate with the Ministry of Education in the development of indigenous languages for the teaching and learning of mathematics and science in schools. The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu stated this at an International Easter Retreat for Ndigbo organized at his hometown in Uburu Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu said though there was already a policy that encourages the learning of mathematics and science in indigenous languages in primary school, the Ministry of Science and Technology would amend the policy and extend it to Senior Secondary School. According to the Minister, the policy will help young Nigerians to embrace Science and Technology and put Nigeria in a position to produce Nobel Laureates in Physics, Chemistry and Medicine.

A former Governor of Old Enugu State, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo called for the restructuring of Nigeria and the creation of Export Free Zone in Igbo land to make the nation more economically viable. A Professor of Political Economy, Pat Utomi regretted that years after Independence Nigeria was yet to be a producing nation and called on the leaders of the country to evolve a policy that would make all regions to go back to competitive communalism.

An Industrialist, Dr Chike Obidigbo attributed some of the challenges facing the economic development of the country to short term economic plan and policy somersault and called for the problems to be addressed.
