The Federal Government says it will complete the Umunya-Amawbia axis of the Enugu Onitsha expressway before the rainy season sets in.

The Controller, Federal Ministry of Works and Housing in Anambra State, Mr Adeyemo Ajani, gave the assurance while speaking with journalists at the project site.

According to Mr. Ajani, twelve kilometres out of eighteen kilometres of the stretch of the road had been completed.

He expresses optimism that if the present tempo,  is sustained, the portion will be completed.

The project was awarded to the firm presently handling it in November 2018 at the cost of N21.1 billion to be completed in 42 months.

The Controller of Works in Anambra State, Mr. Adeyemo Ajani, pointed out that the work done so far was of high quality.

He assured that the project would be delivered in line with the agreement between the government and the contracting firm.

Last week, the Senate Committee on Works led by Senator Adamu Aliero  inspected the progress of work on the Onitsha-Enugu expressway, with a promise that funding would not be a challenge to its completion.

Senator Aliero was also satisfied with the level of work done on the highway.

Meanwhile , some road users in Anambra State have commended President Muhammadu Buhari for keeping his word over the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.

They expressed the hope that the project would reduced traffic congestion on the old road and would ease the stress associated with plying the road.

The Minister of Works and Housing  Babatunde Fashola, during his inspection visit in 2019 expressed satisfaction with the quality of work being done but challenged the contracting firm to step up the pace.

The Enugu-Onitsha expressway, which is a gate way to the South East, holds great economic benefits to the region and the country at large.
