A MECHANISM TO MONITOR UNLAWFUL DETENTION OF SUSPECTS BY FSARS UNDERWAY

The Police Authority says it is developing a Custody Management System to monitor the detention of suspects beyond the stipulated time by officials of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad in the country.

The National  Coordinator of the IGP X Squad, Deputy Commissioner of Police,  Mr. Amechi Elumelu stated this while addressing newsmen at the Police headquarters Amawbia, Anambra State, as part of reformations of the Elite Unit as promised by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris.

Mr Elumelu explained that Mr Idris had directed that all the serving and would-be members of the unit, would be subjected to thorough medical test to ascertain their mental being.

He said from henceforth, the officials of the unit had been warned against acting on any information received from members of the public until it was well processed by superior authority.

This according to Mr Elumelu is to prevent the officials from being used to settle scores by the members of the public and also get involved in civil matters.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police said the Inspector General of Police had set-up a committee that would address the issue of a brand uniform for the personnel of the unit.

Mr Elumelu explained that training and retraining of the personnel of the unit on a regular basis as well as their enhancing their welfare were part of the reformation agenda of the Inspector-General of Police.

The on-going reformation of the unit followed public outcry over their activities in the country.
