US CONSULATE GENERAL INSISTS ON UNBIASED COVERAGE OF THE 2019 GENERAL ELECTION

Journalists in Nigeria are urged to ensure effective and unbiased coverage of the upcoming 2019 elections. This is the view of a resource persons at a two day workshop on election reporting held in Enugu.

The workshop is organized by the United States consulate General, Lagos.

Presenting a paper on the overview of political journalism, the voice of America, VOA and Broadcasting Board of Governors, BBG, Head of Training Africa, Mrs. Joan Mower said covering election was more than reporting on candidates as it concerns issues affecting the people.

Also, the Public Affairs Officer, US Consulate General, Lagos Mrs. Darcy Zotter, said the essence of the workshop was to ensure that Nigerian journalists had adequate information about the best practices of covering elections.

She said it would also help the participating journalists to understand some of the lessons they (journalists from the United States of America) learnt during the coverage of the 2016 US election.

Some of the participants interviewed said they were impressed about the workshop and promised to put what they learnt into practice in the upcoming 2019 Elections.

The workshop had in attendance participants from various media houses in the South East zone.
