NYESOM WIKE EMERGES WINNER OF RIVERS STATE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION

Chief NyesomWike has been declared winner of the Rivers State Governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The incumbent Governor, Chief Wike who ran under the umbrella of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), polled eight hundred and eighty-six thousand, two hundred and sixty-four votes to beat his closest opponent, Mr. BiokpomaboAwara of the African Action Congress, AAC who polled one hundred and seventy three thousand, eight hundred and fifty nine votes.
The Returning officer, Professor Teddy Adias of the Niger Delta University Otuoke, Bayelsa State, made the declaration while announcing the result.

Chief Wike’s victory comes after a very tense polling exercise in Rivers State, which recorded cases of violence and electoral anomalies that sought to mar the election.

The pressure encountered in the course of the governorship race began to build up with the exclusion of the APC from ballot papers, following court injunctions barring INEC from recognizing APC candidates for Rivers elections.
