INVEST IN EDUCATION AND APPOINT CREDIBLE PEOPLE INTO POLITICAL OFFICES, EDUCATIONIST ADVICES PRESIDENT BUHARI

President Muhammadu Buhari and newly elected State Governors have been advised to consider individuals with technical and intellectual prowess for appointment into their cabinets.

A social commentator and educationist, Dr. Dike Oha Okwu gave the advice in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Enugu.

Dr. Okwu stated that for the present administration both at State and Federal levels to make significant progress in the implementation of people-oriented policies and programmes, cabinet appointments must be based on merit rather than favouritism.

He also called for more government investment in education by implementing what he described as free functional compulsory education from Primary through Secondary school to at least first year in the tertiary institution to produce graduates who could drive the economic diversification and other job creation programmes of the government.

Dr. Okwu, who is a renowned mathematician, said that if urgent steps were not taken to address out-of-school syndrome, a time would come when the dropouts would pose insurmountable security challenge to the country.

Dr. Okwu suggested that for the economy to be fully diversified and for the country to achieve food sufficiency, agriculture must be accorded top priority in the scheme of things.

He maintained that farm tools and machineries must be produced locally to achieve the desired result.
