Radio Nigeria’s correspondent who monitored the congress in some Local Government Areas of the State report that it was peaceful.
At Umuahia North Local Government Area, the Congress took place at the party’s Secretariat on Azikiwe Road where accredited delegates were seen at 8am being cleared by the Congress Committee for the exercise.
Also was a similar experience at Obingwa and Umuahia South Local Government Areas, as the Congress went on without any hitches.
There was heavy presence of security agencies comprising men of the Nigeria Police, Department of the Security Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Just before the congress, the Police Command in Abia State warned that it would not fold its hands and watch miscreants disrupt congress of political parties in the State.
The Commissioner of Police in the State, Mr. Anthony Ogbizi stated this to newsmen in Umuahia.
He advised political actors in the State who were not accredited for the congress elections to stay away from the venues of the event.
Mr. Ogbizi also warned politicians against procuring, sponsoring, aiding or financing thugs to cause trouble during voting processes.
He noted that police would invoke appropriate provisions of the law including application of rule of engagement where appropriate to deal decisively with anyone involved in such unprovoked acts.
