World Water Day : Safe drinking water and sanitation must be given priority – Mrs. Mamita Bora Thakkar

On the occasion of this year’s World Water Day, governments and key policymakers are encouraged to ensure that provision of safe drinking water and sanitation are always given priority in policy making and implementation.

Manager, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, United Nations Children’s Fund,UNICEF,Enugu Field Office, Mrs. Mamita Bora Thakkar, gave the advice in Enugu. Mrs.Thakkar noted that water and sanitation, remain key to poverty reduction,economic growth and environmental sustainability.

The Water, Sanitation and Hygiene specialist urged governments to provide safe water and soaps for hand washing in public places and homes, while maintaining environmental cleaniness, to combat the corona virus challenge that has become a pandemic.

Mrs.Thakkar said that the theme of this year’s World Water Day,which is ,”Water and Climate change”,highlighted the Sustainable Development Goals six, which is Water and Sanitation for all by 2030. She explained that the theme also stressed the need for concerted efforts, towards addressing the issue of climate change.
