Enugu State Govt urged to Give Assent to Violence Against Persons Bill

Enugu State Governor has been urged to consider the signing of the Violence Against Persons Bill, , into Law as a matter of urgency.

The Executive Director, Society for the Improvement of Rural People, (SIRP) Dr Chris Ugwu made the call in an interview during a Dialogue on Violence Against Women and Girls Living with HIV in Enugu State.

Dr. Ugwu also urged Stake holders in Ministries, nongovernmental organisations, faith based organisations among others to think aloud and come up with ideas to bring    the issue of Violence Against Women to an end in the State.

The Chairman of the Forum and Zonal Director, National Human Rights Commission, Enugu, Mrs. Uche Nwokeocha enjoined all Stakeholders to work relentlessly towards the achievement of the purpose of bringing violence against women to an end.

In a keynote address entitled “Understanding and Effective Implementation of the Enugu State Violence Against Persons Law”, VAP, a staff   of the Ministry of Justice, Enugu, Mrs. Ngozi Okoye commended the courage of those living with HIV for sharing their experiences in public places.

The Program Manager, Positive Action for Treatment Access, PATA, gave an overview of its projects on the campaign to end violence in Lagos and Enugu States including partnership dialogue.

Some of the people living with HIV who shared their experiences said stigmatization from the society was a major problem to them.

The dialogue attracted over sixty participants from different walks of life including the Media.
