TODAY IS WORLD BEE DAY.
The United Nations designated twentieth may as world Bee day to raise awareness om the importance of pollinators , the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development .
The goal is to strengthen measures aimed at protecting bees and other pollinators , which significantly contribute to solving problems related to the global food security and eliminate hunger in developing countries.
Meanwhile the recent Covid – 19 pandemic has had an undeniable impact on the beekeeping sector , affecting the production , the market and as a consequence , the livelihood of beekeepers.
This years World Bee Day will be focusing on bee production and good practices adopted by beekeepers to support their livelihoods and deliver good quality products.
Bee also produce honey which is consumed human beings and also used in many sectors including pharmaceuticals . However according to a bee farmer in Adazienu community of Anambra state, Mr Emeka Okafor , despite the importance of bee to human existence only a handful of farmers consider it as part of food security.
Mr Okafor who explained that bee keeping flourish only in dry season when colonies that produce high yield are spotted and multiplied in expansion plan, encouraged youths and other farmers to embrace bee keeping as it yields income and requires little capital to set up.
The World Bee day coincides with the birthday of Anton Jansa, who in the eighteenth century pioneered modern beekeeping techniques in his native Slovenia and praised the bees for their ability to work so hard , while needing so little attention.
