Police in Ebonyi State have arrested eleven suspected pipeline vandals including an Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps at Amaeze Ishiagu in Ivo Local Government Area of the state.
Parading the suspects at Police Headquarters in Abakaliki, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mrs. Peace Ibekwe-Abdallah explained that their arrest followed a tip off.
According to Mrs. Ibekwe Abdallah, other suspects escaped during exchange of gun fire with the operatives of the command while those arrested were in possession of substance suspected to be petroleum products siphoned from broken NNPC pipeline in the area.
She said the Police also arrested a notorious armed robber, one Benjamin from Ugbana Ishieke in Ebonyi Local government area for alleged car theft and killing of a member of his gang over disagreement on the sharing formula of their loot.
The Commissioner of Police stated that the Command also arrested one Emmanuel at Ogbala Izzi in Ebonyi Local government area for allegedly trafficking thirteen boys to Port-Harcourt while a Police Corporal and a gang of cultists had been charged to court for allegedly defiling young girls.
Some of the suspects including Benjamin and one Jarfara who was a driver of one of the vehicles used in pipeline vandalism confessed to the crimes.
Items allegedly recovered from them included locally made rifles, pistols, expended cartridges, machetes, vehicles and motorcycles while the police assured that the suspects would be charged to court after investigations.
Correspondent Amechi Odo reports that the police also impounded a truck and bus used by the suspected vandals to carryout the alleged crime.
