STAKEHOLDERS IN EDUCATION SECTOR ADVOCATE PENALTY FOR SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Students harassed sexually in institutions of higher learning have been encouraged to report such cases to school authority.

Guests on Media Link, a Radio Nigeria Enugu live interactive programme gave the advice while discussing the topic “Demand and Offer for Sex in Exchange for Marks in Institutions of Higher Learning”.

One of the guests and Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT Chapter, Dr. Chinedu Aguba explained that every institution had Ethics and Grievances Committee to handle such matters.

Dr. Aguba described the trend as occupational hazards in the teaching profession.

He frowned at the attitude and pointed out that lecturers were supposed to take part in building the character of students.

Another guest, a legal practitioner, Dr. Godstime Okafor blamed students who had fallen victims to the situation for not taking action.

Dr. Okafor encouraged students who were afraid of being victimized by the school authority to report the case to human rights activists.

He called on parents to rise up to their responsibility of training their children properly.

A Graduate of Godfrey Okoye University, who is also a guest, Miss Chinelo Eneh blamed it on both Lecturers and students.

According to her, some students decline reporting because the Committee is also made up of same lectures involved in the act.

Callers in the programme advised the school authorities to ensure that both Lecturers and students caught in the act were punished to serve as lesson to others.
