RESUSCITATE REMAND HOMES: ABIA ASSEMBLY TO STATE GOVT.

The Abia State House of Assembly has passed a resolution mandating the State Government to resuscitate Remand Homes where mentally deranged people could be taken to, for rehabilitation.

Presenting the issue during plenary as a matter of urgent public importance, the member representing Obingwa East Constituency, Mr. Solomon Akpulonu, noted that the number of mad people in the State was on the increase, especially on the streets of Umuahia and Aba.

He suggested that a Committee be set up to evacuate such people from the street, and be taken to a facility where they could be taken care of.

Also, the Majority Leader of the House, Mr. Chinedum Orji, said that the State Government must ensure the evacuation of the mad people back to the neighboring States, where he believed they came from.

He stressed that the State could not bear the cost of the rehabilitation process alone and therefore called for their evacuation back to their various States.

After the submissions of the lawmakers, the Speaker, Mr. Chinwendu Kalu, read out the resolution of the House mandating the State Government to resuscitate the remand homes for onward rehabilitation of such people, expressing the hope that they could regain sanity if adequate care was given to them.

During plenary four members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC, but however failed to declare their seats vacant as widely expected.
