RARE GEM LADY CHINWE ONONYE BOWS OUT MERITORIOUSLY AS HEAD OF NEWS.

OnonyeIt was a mixed moment of sadness and joy, Monday, when the head of news in Radio Nigeria, South East zone, Enugu Lady Chinwe Ononye announced her retirement after thirty five years of meritorious service to the nation. Presiding over her last editorial conference in the news sub-directorate, Lady Ononye, “the iron lady” as she is fondly referred to, said was bowing out without regrets.

She expressed joy at haven worked with a team of highly skilled professionals, who contributed to the successes she recorded through her tenure as Deputy Director News in the zone. She recalled that she was firm in taking and executing her decisions, which may not have gone down well with some of her colleagues, but were for the good of the profession.

Lady Ononye said was glad to hand over the baton to Mr Stone Echerobia Agonmuo, whom she described as “a confidante and an ally”, and promised to lend a hand when called upon.

Some members of staff were happy she was retiring in good health but would be missed after the long years of interacting with her. They wished her well in her future endeavours.

It will be recalled that Lady Chinwe Ononye joined the services of Radio Nigeria, Enugu in 1981as junior Reporter/Editor and later moved to the station’s headquarters in Abuja, were she rose to the position of Assistant Director news, in-charge of the Reporters Corps. She was transferred to Purity FM 102.5 Awka as General Manager, and was later redeployed to the zonal headquarters as Deputy Director news. One of the innovations she brought was the introduction of the popular zonal network news in English and Igbo.

The head of news, Stone Agonmo was before the new responsibility, the immediate past General Manager of Pacesetter fm 103.5 Umuahia, Abia State.
