PROF. OSIBOGUN TO GOVT: EXPAND SOURCES OF FUNDING FOR HEALTH RELATED PROGRAMMES

A consultant public health physician and epidemiologist, Professor Akin Osibogun, has called for concerted efforts towards achieving the United Nations Universal Health Coverage.

Professor Osibogun made the call while delivering the 2017 Lecture of the Faculty of Medicine, College of Health Sciences Lecture at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi.

Speaking on the theme “Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs: the roadmap for Nigeria,” Professor Osibogun, who is a former Chief Medical Director, Lagos University Teaching hospital, LUTH, argued that for Nigeria to get things right in its health sector, conscious efforts must be made towards improving access and quality of health care delivery within the country.

While noting with dissatisfaction the poor rating of Nigeria in terms of Universal Health Coverage, Professor Osibogun, emphasized the need to expand sources of funding for health related programmes.

He noted that use of resources must also be improved upon to ensure that Nigeria got value for huge investment in the health sector.

The Chairman of the occasion and Vice Chancellor Nnamd iAzikiwe University, Awka, Professor Joseph Ahaneku, represented by Professor Brian Adinma, called for the sustenance of the faculty lecture, which he described as a feast of knowledge that every member of the academia should look forward to annually.

He charged those in attendance, especially students in the faculty, to apply the knowledge garnered during the event to enable Nigeria to achieve better health indices.
