OVER SPEEDING: A SUICIDE MISSION
Federal Road Safety Corps has attributed fifty percent of road crashes in the country to over speeding.
The Sector Commander of the Corps in Anambra State, Commander Sunday Ajayi disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the 2018 West Africa Road Safety Organization WARSO, Day in Awka.
The event started with a road walk around Awka metropolis.
The West Africa Road Safety Organization day came on board as part of efforts by West African Countries to rid the roads in the sub-region of fatality.
Commander Ajayi said the body was established in 2008, with the mandate to ensure free movement of people and goods on West African roads as well as to ensure the economic development of the region.
He listed the functions of the body to include; promotion of joint road safety activities, conducting of researches on road safety and encouraging the creation of Road Safety Agencies where they were not in existence.
The Sector Commander enumerated the achievements of the organization to include; annual celebration of West Africa Road Safety Organization Day and adoption of template for collation of statistical data by member country.
Commander Ajayi therefore warned motorists against over speeding, describing it as a suicide mission.
In a remark, the Managing Director, Anambra State Traffic Management Agency, Chief Christopher Uzoechina while commending the corps for embarking on the programme, insisted that safety on the roads was everybody’s business.
The theme for this year’s event is “West Africa Road Safety Organization in the Ten Years: The journey so far.
