OVER 70% OF INMATES IN NIGERIA PRISONS ON AWAITING TRIAL….

The Minister of Interior, Retired Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazzau says over seventy percent of inmates in prisons across the country are on awaiting trial. He stated this at the inspection of a new Federal Prison being constructed by the Ebonyi State Government in Abakaliki.

Retired General Dambazzau who was on a working visit to the State pointed out that the Ministry had embarked on a number of reforms which included collaborating with the Police and the Judiciary to ensure speedy trials.

The Minister charged Management of Prisons to prioritize rehabilitation of inmates, also stated that the Ministry is working to ensure that prison staff were promoted based on merit to enhance motivation.

The Minister was received by the Deputy Governor of the State, Dr. Kelechi Igwe who also took him to visit other projects of the State Government.
