OVER 30 VEHICLES IMPOUNDED FOR VIOLATING BORDER LOCKDOWN ORDER IN ANAMBRA

Over thirty commercial vehicles conveying commuters from other States into Anambra have been impounded by the Anambra State Government.

The Commissioner for Transport , Dr. Christian Madubuko led the enforcement team that impounded the vehicles at the Amansea boundary between Anambra and Enugu States, reminding them that Covid -19 lockdown on intra- state movement was still in full force.

The team also turned back, hundreds of commuters who were discharged by vehicles at the boundary areas where they intended to cross over to Anambra State.

Governor Willie Obiano in a recent broadcast to the people, announced the lifting of total lockdown in the State but had stated that all the boundaries still remained closed in a bid to ensure that no new case of Covid -19 was recorded in the area.

Surprisingly, a visit to the Amansea boundary reveals non compliance with the border lockdown order as hundreds of people trooped in and out of the State daily, despite the presence of combined security team.

Shuttle buses and commercial motorcyclists were said to be making brisk business at the old road axis and the expressway of the boundary between Enugu and Anambra States as they picked and discharged commuters at different points along the road.

This development according to the Commissioner for Transport, Doctor Madubuko prompted the visit to ensure that such journey which could jeopardise the Government’s efforts against COVID- 19 was discouraged.

Dr. Madubuko regretted that despite the presence of the security team, commuters from different parts of the country including corpses were being carried in and out of the State through the borders.

He noted that illegal motor parks being operated within the boundary areas were also shut down as they were also encouraging people to disobey Government’s directive on border lockdown.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, Mr Sam Odinye who regretted the level of non compliance by the people, said the State would continue to enforce the boundary lockdown as it was one of the safest ways of protecting the residents of the State against the dreaded Coronavirus.

Another member of the enforcement team and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Legal Matters, Mr Chika Ekwenugo disclosed that the activities of commercial motorcyclists operating at the Ugwuoba/Enugu axis had become worrisome to the extent that they attacked security personnel enforcing the Government’s order.

The team which was led by the Commissioner of Transport during the enforcement exercise turned back all the commuters entering into the State on foot as well as impounded vehicles that were not on essential duty or carrying essential items.
