NEMA COMMENCES ASSESSMENT OF FLOOD PRONE AREAS IN ANAMBRA STATE

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA says it has commenced the assessment of flood prone areas in Anambra State in view of this year’s forecasts.

The Zonal Coordinator of NEMA in the South East, Mr Ibarakumo Brandon made this known during a visit to Governor Willie Obiano at Government House Awka.

Mr Ibarakumo Brandon explained that the visit was to map out strategies to sensitize residents on safety measures as the floods had been felt in some parts of the State. Responding, Governor Willie Obiano challenged NEMA to be proactive in its response to emergency situations to save lives. He called for Federal Government’s assistance to those whose farmlands had been devastated by flood.

Governor Obiano also called for payment of compensation to flood victims of 2012 who were left out in the Federal Government’s gesture.

The Executive Secretary of State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Chief Paul Odenigbo noted that twenty eight Internally Displaced Persons centres had been established in eight Local Government Areas as part of measures to mitigate the impending floods.
