METROLOGIST CALLS FOR EARLY ACTIONS TO ADDRESS PREDICTED FLOODING

REPORTER: JOHN MADUAGWU

An metrologist, Mr. Kingsley Okorie, wants Government at all levels, relevant agencies and citizens to adopt proactive strategies to avert weather related disasters.

Mr. Okorie, who is the Head, Agro-meteorology Department, National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike, made his view known in an interview with Radio Nigeria.

He said this was necessary to prevent a repetition of severe destruction occasioned by heavy rain and flooding in many parts of the country last year.

Mr. Okorie warned that the predictions made by relevant agencies on what to expect in the 2023 rainy season were already playing out as Umuahia residents last week Wednesday, witnessed a fierce and stormy rainfall accompanied by string winds, which caused serious damage in several parts of the state capital.

The weather expert reiterated that governments and relevant agencies as well as citizens must not wait until disaster strikes, and lives and property lost before thinking of evacuating people from danger zones to safer places.
