LASS FEVER CLAIMS ONE LIFE IN ABIA AS GOVT PREPARES TO CONTAIN THE DISEASE
Abia State Government says adequate measures are being taken to address reported case of Lassa fever in the State.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Abia State, Mr. Emole Egbulefu, confirmed to journalists in Umuahia, that a 28 year old man from Olokoro in Umuahia South local Government Area of the state, died of Lassa Fever at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia on 1 January 2020, the same day he was brought to the hospital.
He explained that contacts with the index patient were now on surveillance, noting that the Lassa Fever case was the fourth in the State since 1999.
The Permanent Secretary, called on residents not to panic, but stressed the need for people to maintain high level hygiene and ensure that foods were adequately protected from rat secretion such as urine and feces.
He explained that identified case of Lassa Fever could be contained within forty eight hours of treatment and stressed the need for early diagnosis.
