INEC IN ENUGU DECRIES LOW TURN OUT OF PEOPLE IN THE ONGOING VOTER REGISTRATION

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Enugu State, Mr. Emeka Ononomadu has expressed worry over the low turnout of people in the on-going continuous voter registration.

Mr. Ononomadu made the observation while addressing the leadership of the Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers at the House of Chiefs Enugu.

He encouraged the royal fathers to be in the fore front of sensitizing their subjects noting that INEC was working to address all the bottlenecks hindering the smooth conduct of the exercise.

“We have come to familiarize ourselves with the traditional rulers of Enugu State to seek their support to help us mobilize citizens of Enugu State to participate in the ongoing voter registration. We are prepared to make sure this exercise succeeds in the state.”

Responding, the Chairman, Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, Ambassador Lawrence Agubuzu urged INEC to provide unrestricted opportunity for people to freely exercise their franchise in all the forth-coming elections saying that they would redouble their efforts towards sensitizing their people.

“The traditional rulers of Enugu State expect INEC to do a good job in 2019 by being patriotic, impartial, Courageous, proactive, and incorruptible.”

Speaking on the importance of the continuous voter registration, a retired Director in INEC, Igwe Sam Ukah and the Grand Patron Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, Igwe Simeon Osisi Itodo said it was compulsory for all eligible citizen.

“We are architects of June 12. By calling us here for this meeting means we are now going to be coopted as part of the systemthat will make the election successful.”

“I have been instructing my people, let everybody go and register and get this thing, for his own benefit and that of the nation.”

They called on INEC to intensify effort to address the challenges of distance and malfunctioning of registration equipment being witnessed in some parts of the state.
