FG TO BUILD INDEPENDENT POWER PLANTS IN 37 VERSITIES

The Federal Government is set to award contracts for the establishment of Independent power plants in 37 universities across the country to solve the perennial challenges of power supply in the citadels of learning.

President Muhammadu Buhari gave the indication in a message to the 31st Convocation of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO).

He said the award of the contract became necessary following the completion of energy audit in the universities as part of efforts to encourage research and learning.

President Buhari represented by the Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Anwukah, challenged university authorities to key into the vision 2030 of the government, which was aimed at producing self reliant and highly skilled graduates.

Professor Anwukah described as worrisome the reported death of three undergraduate students of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, who allegedly lost their lives during a sex romp after abusing substances believed to be hard drugs and called on the management to take measures to forestall future occurrence.

The Vice Chancellor of FUTO Professor Francis Eze, urged youths to be creative and imbibe an entrepreneurial spirit to enable them to succeed in life.

He said 42 students from various departments were awarded first class degrees of the University with Miss Jane Ogwo of the department of Maritime Management Technology emerging the overall best having scored a CGPA of 4.9 (four point nine).

Four hundred and twenty one persons were awarded post graduate degrees during the ceremony.
