FG INTENSIFIES CAMPAIGN TO END OPEN DEFECATION BY 2025

 The Minister of Water Resources, Alhaji Suleman Adamu, has reiterated Federal Government’s commitment towards making the country open defecation-free.

The Minister made this known in a message to a “One Day Sensitization Campaign and Capacity Training for Community Orientation and Mobilization Officers in Abia State on Open Defecation-free” organized by National Orientation Agency and Federal Ministry of Water Resources.

The Minister represented by a director in the Ministry, Mrs. Chizoba Opara, said that the “Clean Nigeria Campaign, Use Toilet” inaugurated by the Federal Government was aimed at implementing the national roadmap towards making Nigeria open defecation-free by the year 2025.

He noted that the campaign was for behaviour change, which sought to mobilse high level political support, resources and the entire populance towards building a new culture of safe sanitation. The Director General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr. Garba Abari, was represented by Focal Person, Open Defecation-Free in the Agency, Mr. Robinson Okechi.

The NOA boss commended the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari for the fight to end open defecation in country, stating that before the year 2025, Nigeria would have achieve the target goal of open defecation-free. In a remark, the Director NOA in Abia State, Dr. Ngozi Okechukwu, harped on the need for clean water, decent sanitation and good hygiene practices as crucial not only to achieve open defecation-free but in stemming the chains of transmission of coronavirus in the society.

The General Manager, Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency in Abia State, Mr. Oko Ukoh, expressed concern over the rising cases of open defecation in the area and urged the people to imbibe behavioral change by ending the ugly practice. The theme for the one day workshop is “Citizen’s Engagement Towards Eradication of Open Defecation in Nigeria by 2025.”
