ENUGU STATE GOVT EXPRESSES RESOLVE TO REPOSITION POLYTECHNIC EDUCATION

The Enugu State Government says it will increase funding for the State Polytechnic at Iwollo, Ezeagu Local Government Area to enhance development of manpower needed for industrial transformation of the State. The Governor of the State, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi stated this at the ten year anniversary of the Institution.

Some stakeholders in the Education Sector at the event, expressed displeasure at the manner Polytechnics in the country abandoned their core responsibility. The Governor of Enugu State represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Simon Ortuanya said the Government was committed to training the much needed manpower that would propel industrial revolution of the State. Professor Ortuanya announced that the State Government would provide the needed logistics for the Polytechnic to realize its goal.

In a lecture titled “Polytechnic Education, the Engine of Nigeria Industrial Growth and Development”, the Chairman of the Convention for Intellectual Cooperation of Nigeria, Professor Ejike Chiwenyite noted that advanced countries were converting some of their higher institutions to Polytechnics.

Professor Chiwenyite advised policy makers in the country to follow the trend by developing technical education to check unemployment. The Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution, Chief Chinedu Onu was optimistic that the Polytechnic was moving in the right direction and urged the youth to take the advantage. The Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Cletus Akubilo commended the Enugu State Government for its financial intervention which he said yielded positive results.

Professor Akubilo assured the people that the school would not loose its focus. Discussants had earlier attributed loss of valve system, political influence and poor funding as some of the challenges affecting polytechnic education in the country.
