ENUGU STATE GOVERNMENT CALLS FOR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION ON THE UGWU-ONYEAMA AXIS OF THE ENUGU-ONITSHA EXPRESSWAY.
The Enugu State Government has appealed to the Federal Government for immediate intervention on the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, which has almost been washed away by gully erosion.
The Deputy Governor, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo made the appeal during an inspection tour of some erosion sites in the state which include Native Authority Road, Amagu in Udi Local Government Area and sections of the Ugwuogo -Nike- Opi Nsukka road.
Mrs. Ezeilo while addressing journalists after the inspection said that the State Government was committed to the safety of road users and appealed to the Federal Government for the refund of the money spent, rehabilitating Federal roads in the area.
She however directed the Udi Local Government Council Chairman to close the Native Authority Road to prevent loss of life in the area
It is the duty of the government to alleviate the suffering of the masses and I want to make it known to everybody down to the Federal Government that we lose life here almost on daily basis.
The State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Greg Nnaji said that the ‘’on the spot ‘’, assessment of the gully erosions revealed that some of the sites had become life threatening and needed immediate attention.
From what we think, is a secondary erosion track. As you can see, it has already undermined the existing problem, even those who have already structured the culvert have been completely devastated.
Our Correspondent reports that the fault lines of three out of the six erosion sites visited had already caved in, while others are still developing.
