ENUGU ASSEMBLY SPEAKER INAUGURATES JOINT SECURITY COMMITTEE OF ETHNIC NATIONALITIES

The Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, Chief Edward Ubosi, has called on residents of the State to be in the vanguard of promoting peace and security in the area. Chief Ubosi stated this during the first peace and security summit organized for leaders of some ethnic groups in Abakpa district, Enugu East Local Government Area, with the theme “Towards a Peaceful Co-existence.”

The Summit was conveyed by the Speaker, Chief Edward Ubosi as part of measures to promote peaceful co-existence in view of society challenges in the country. Addressing delegates of various ethnic groups, including ijaw and Hausa-fulani community as well as those from Benue and Taraba States, the Speaker commended them for preaching peace and their support to the State Government.

He urged the people to be their brothers’ keeper amidst criminalities and discrimination, noting that some persons had lived in the area for over fifty years and had raised families, socializing and integrating with their host communities.

Chief Ubosi appealed to the residents to involve all ethnic groups in security formation to make the system more robust and result oriented. The Chairman of Enugu East Local Government area, Chief Alex Ugwu, said the Council would support people with peaceful and genuine business. He commended the Hausa, Fulani community in the district for their harmonious co-existence with their host communities.

The Leader Arewa Consultative Forum, Enugu State, Alhaji Isa Mohammed, said some of them had stayed for over forty years in the State and had children as well. He vowed that the group would not allow any external influence to destroy the existing peace in the area.

Other leaders of Hausa-Fulani Community, who spoke with the Radio Nigeria appealed for understanding among the people. Highlight of the Summit was Inauguration of Joint Security Committee to assist Neighbourhood Watch Groups and other security agencies in promoting peace and security in the State.
