REPS COMMITTEE TO RESOLVE NON FUNCTIONALITY OF PORTS IN SOUTH EAST

Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, says the full activation of the Onitsha Port will greatly boost commercial activities in the South East region and country at large. The Governor made the assertion at the governor’s lodge Amawobia when he received a delegation from the House of Representatives Committee on Ports.

Governor Obiano said that the port was of great importance to the state as over eighty percent of its population was into importation. The leader of the delegation and Chairman House Committee on Ports, Alhaji Buba Yakubu,  revealed that the investigative committee was set up following motion by a lawmaker from Anambra State, calling for investigation into why the ports in the region were not functional.

Alhaji Yakubu noted that a public hearing on why sea ports in the south east of the country were not put to maximum use had been held in the affected states, including Anambra. He assured the Governor that the committee would analyse the inputs made by critical stakeholders on the matter, to ensure that the issue driving the non functionality of the ports were urgently resolved.

The sponsor of the motion, Chief Ifeanyi Ibezi, representing Idemili North  and South Federal Constituency believed that the ports when functional would create jobs, generate revenue and increase ease of doing business in the region.
