UN OBSERVES ENGLISH LANGUAGE DAY

Nigeria joins the rest of the globe to observe today, April 23, as English Language Day.
The United Nations through its Department of Public Information in 2010 established language days to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all its six official languages.
April 23 was chosen to celebrate the English Language annually because it is a date traditionally observed as the birthday and death date of William Shakespeare.
Commenting on the essence of the celebration, the United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, explained that multilingualism is vital to the sustainability of the organization.
The official languages of the United Nations are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russia and Spanish.
