ROLE OF PARENTS IN CHILD UPBRINGING IN FOCUS AS GLOBAL DAY OF PARENTS IS CELEBRATED

June first every year is observed as global day of parents.

The Day was set aside by the United Nations to appreciate parents.

The Advanced Learners Dictionary defines a parent as somebody’s mother, father or legal guardian.

Due to the important roles parents play in societal development, the United Nations General Assembly deemed it necessary to celebrate them every June one.

The Day first proclaimed in 2012 was an opportunity to appreciate all parents in all parts of the world for their selfless commitment to child upbringing.

Emphasizing the critical roles of parents in rearing of children, a Clinical Psychologist, Doctor Tobias Chukwudi Obi explained that parents had the primary responsibility of nurturing and protecting children till adulthood.

Doctor Obi encouraged parents to devote more time to their children than living them to the mercies of caregivers.

A religious leader and Bishop, Diocese of Eha Amufu, Anglican Communion, the Right Reverend Daniel Nkemjika Olinya condemned the attitude of some children who disrespected or neglected their parents.

According to Bishop Olinya, long life and prosperity awaits any child who honours and respects his or her parents in line with biblical injunction.
