QUIZ THE CAPACITY OF CANDIDATES FOR 2019 ELECTIONS: HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST TELLS THE MEDIA

As next year’s elections draws nearer, journalists in Nigeria are advised to develop capacity in interrogating candidates vying for various political offices to enable the people make informed choice during voting rather than promoting the candidates.

Guests on a Radio Nigeria Enugu Zonal Network political programme “Political Watch” stated this while discussing on the topic “The Media and 2019 General Election.”

One of them a human rights activist, Chief Ifeanyichukwu Okonkwo, accused the INEC and some politicians of using the media for praise singing instead of facility platforms where critical issues facing the nation could be addressed.

The Vice President, Nigeria Union of Journalists Zone C, Prince Petrus Obi said that the Nigeria journalists are living up to expectation despite poor remuneration and other challenges facing journalism in the country Media.

Prince Obi said that he was ready to cover next year’s election professionally.

INEC Public Relations Officer in Enugu State, Mr. Pius Eze, noted that the commission was collaborating with journalists to educate and inform the public on the activities of the commission.

Callers in the programme canvassed for improvement on the welfare of journalists and declined undue influence of the government and politicians on some journalists and media house.
