A CUSTODY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TO MONITOR DETENTION OF SUSPECTS BY THE FEDERAL SPECIAL ANTI ROBBERY SQUAD IS UNDERWAY

The Police Authority says it is developing a Custody Management System to monitor the detention of suspects beyond the stipulated time by the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad in the country.

The National Co-ordinator of the IGP X Squad, Mr Amechi Elumelu who stated this while addressing newsmen at the Police Headquarters Amawbia, Anambra State, explained that it  was in-line  with the reformation of the elite unit as promised by the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris.

Mr. Elumelu who is also a Deputy Commissioner of Police explained that Mr. Idris had directed that all the serving and would-be members of the unit should be subjected to thorough medical test to ascertain their mental and physical health status.

He stated that officials of the unit had been warned against acting on any information received from members of the public until it was well processed by superior authority.

This according to Mr. Elumelu was to prevent the squad from being used to settle scores by the members of the public and also prevent officers from getting involved in civil matters.

Mr Elumelu said that the Inspector General of Police had set-up a committee that would address the issue of a brand uniform for the personnel of the unit.

Mr. Elumelu explained that training and retraining of the personnel of the unit on a regular basis as well as their welfare were part of the reformation agenda of the Inspector-General of Police.

Our Correspondent reports that the reformation of the unit followed public outcry over its alleged inappropriate activities in the country.
