ENUGU RESIDENTS DECRY HIGH COST OF PETROL
Commuters and motorists in Enugu State have expressed worry over the persistent hike in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise known as petrol.
They made their feelings known when Radio Nigeria went round the metropolis to monitor the price of the commodity after the Christmas and New Year festivities.
For more than three weeks, the price of petrol across the country had skyrocketed two times above government approved price of ₦145 per litre.
Remarkable efforts made by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC) and the Federal Government to reverse the trend had resulted in the reduction of price of the commodity in some states while it had remained high in others.
A visit to some filling stations within Enugu metropolis showed that the commodity was still scarce and sold between ₦200 and ₦250 per litre.
Some commuters, including Mr. Ugochukwu Nwokonta and Mr. Peter Maduakor, interviewed described the price as outrageous and handiwork of some greedy marketers and distributors in the industry.
They accused the department of Petroleum Resources of laxity and called for sanctions on any filling station that is selling above the approved price.
Others who spoke to Radio Nigeria lamented the high cost of the commodity and appealed to government to address the situation urgently.
A Manager in one of the filling stations visited explained that they were selling the product high because they bought at the higher rate.
When Radio Nigeria visited Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) Office in Enugu, their officers were not around to speak on the matter.
