ANAMBRA SPEAKER PRESENTS SCORECARD
REPORTER: UCHE NDEKE
The Anambra State House of Assembly says it has so far passed 11 of the 21 bills presented before it in the last one year.
The Speaker of the House, Mr. Somtochukwu Udeze, stated this at the legislative complex in Awka while briefing journalists on activities and achievements of the 8th Assembly after their inauguration on June 12, 2023.
Mr. Udeze, who commended his colleagues for their resolve to contribute towards the overall development of the state, irrespective of political party affiliations, also stated that 62 motions and about 70 resolutions were considered within the period under review.
According to the Speaker, of the 21 bills, 11 were executive bills while 10 were private legislative members bills which were all in the best interest of the society.
Mr. Udeze said some of the challenges of the 8th Assembly included having some first time members who were not abreast with the legislative principles after their inauguration which prompted the leadership to organise seminars within and outside the state to keep them in tune with the operations of the house.
The Speaker also disclosed that all the legislators work as a team as there was nothing like party loyalty but every effort geared to serving the people of Anambra State.
Mr. Udeze, while stating that the 8th Assembly did not need to be confrontational with the Executive to be seen as active, noted that there was a cordial working relationship with the Governor and the entire Executive arm for the overall development of the state.
The Speaker, who represents Ogbaru Constituency 2 and serving for a third term, said they were presently working on the issue of Legislative autonomy as the Commission for the smooth take off would soon be in place.
He gave an assurance that they would continue to make quality laws that would be in the overall interest of the state without being rubber stamped.
