RADIO STATION INVASION: ABIA CP APOLOGIES, ORDERS ORDERLY ROOM TRIAL OF ERRING POLICEMEN
REPORTER: JOHN MADUAGWU
Abia State Police Command says it has taken necessary disciplinary action following an incident involving an arrest carried out by some police personnel at an online radio studio in Umuahia.
This is contained in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Ms. Maureen Chinaka.
According to the statement, the police officers who made the arrest conducted themselves unprofessionally.
It explained that while there was no law prohibiting a police officer from making an arrest in a studio, the facts surrounding the particular case being investigated by the police officers did not warrant such actions.
The statement noted that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, had conducted an on-the-spot assessment at the broadcast outfit where he held discussions with their Director and apologized for the conduct of the officers.
The statement pointed out that the orderly room trial of the officers involved in the incident had commenced and they would be disciplined accordingly, if found guilty.
It reiterated the commitment of the Command towards maintaining a professionally competent and people-friendly Police Force in line with the vision of the Inspector General of Police.
The invasion of the private radio station had attracted criticisms on electronic and social media against the mode of operation of some police operatives,
Most of the respondents called for investigation and severe disciplinary action against the affected policemen.
